Curious what the little stickers with the codes on your produce stand for? PLU codes or “Price-Lookup Codes” are a standardized way for farmers and sellers of product to store information about the fresh produce we consume, encapsulated into a tiny series of numbers.
The PLU codes help grocery stores and markets with accurate inventory control and indicate data about the produce including variety and type. The numbers can also help consumers understand the origins of the produce available to them.
1⃣  A four-digit code beginning with a “3” or a “4” indicate that the produce is “conventionally grown”. This could indicate the use of, or presence of agricultural fertilizers, industrial chemicals and/or pesticides used in the production of the produce.
2⃣  A five-digit code beginning with a “9” means the product was grown organically. To be certified as an organic produce, the product must comply with specific standards such as the absence of synthetic pesticides and chemical fertilizers.
3⃣  A five-digit code starting with the number “8” means that the produce is “genetically modified” — also known as “GM Foods” “Biotech Foods.”
Obviously, if you grow your own food, you don’t need to worry over. Hope that helps! Happy shopping #vegansofig
